In a new report the American College of Physicians notes, "Exercise or alternative therapies can work as well as or better than medications, but don’t come with the side effects." They also find that, "For chronic back pain, exercise, rehabilitation therapy, acupuncture, and mindfulness-based stress reduction have the best evidence for effectiveness."
