How Acupuncture Helps with Joint Pain and Stiffness

Looking for a natural remedy for sore, stiff joints? Whether you have stiff knees or can't move your shoulder without pain, acupuncture offers an effective joint pain solution. Treatments help manage pain and inflammation caused by injuries, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, golf elbow, tennis elbow, and other joint conditions.

7 Ways Acupuncture Improves Joint Pain and Stiffness

Joint injuries and conditions can disrupt Yin and Yang, two natural forces that must remain balanced for good health. Imbalances can occur if Qi, a type of invisible energy that flows through the body, becomes blocked. Acupuncturists improve Qi flow by inserting hair-thin needles into the skin at the site of blockages. Restoring balance to the body eases pain, stiffness, and other uncomfortable symptoms.

Your acupuncture treatment is tailored to your symptoms and diagnosis. In addition to offering acupuncture treatments, your acupuncturist may also recommend herbal medications that support your treatments.

Benefits of acupuncture treatments include:

  • Natural Pain Relief. Acupuncture activates your body's natural pain-fighting system. Treatments trigger the release of endorphins and serotonin, hormones that ease pain. As a result, you might be able to lower your dosage of over-the-counter or prescription pain medication or stop taking those medications entirely. Acupuncture also relieves pain by preventing pain signals from reaching the brain.
  • Reduced Inflammation. Inflammation in the tissues in and around a joint can lead to pain and stiffness. Acupuncture relieves inflammation naturally by prompting your body to release inflammation-fighting chemicals.
  • Improved Joint Flexibility. Acupuncture relaxes tight muscles and tissues around joints, reducing stiffness and improving your ability to move your joints easily. A case report published in Acupuncture and Electro-Therapeutics Research in 2025 examined the effects of acupuncture in a man experiencing elbow stiffness. After acupuncture treatment and needle therapy, the range of motion in his elbow improved from 30 degrees to 120 degrees.
  • Better Circulation. Swollen, inflamed tissues restrict the normal flow of blood to the joints. Good blood flow is needed to bring healing nutrients to the tissues and remove waste products. Improving circulation with acupuncture can speed healing and reduce inflammation.
  • Improved Nerve Function. Nerve irritation is an unfortunate consequence of many joint injuries and conditions. Nerves become overly sensitive if they remain irritated for a long time. Sensitive nerves react painfully to minor stimuli that wouldn't normally cause pain. Acupuncture treatments calm the nerves and restore balance to the nervous system.
  • Slower Progression of Arthritis. Arthritis occurs when cartilage breaks down or wears away. Cartilage cushions the ends of the bones and is essential for smooth, comfortable joint movements. Without enough cartilage, your bones rub together painfully every time you move your joint. Acupuncture treatments may slow the breakdown of cartilage, according to a review published in Perspectives on Integrative Medicine in 2024. The review noted that acupuncture can reduce cell death in cartilage and decrease pain sensitivity.
  • Less Stress. When you're struggling with joint pain, it's only natural to feel stressed. Unfortunately, stress can tighten muscles, worsening pain and stiffness. Endorphins and serotonin released during acupuncture treatments not only relieve pain, but also promote relaxation and improve your mood. Does your joint pain keep you up at night? When you're relaxed and pain-free, you may find sleep issues also disappear.
